    • 1). Contact the department of human resources in the county in which you reside. The DHS is the governing body for the welfare program and can assist you in filling out your applications.

    • 2). Review the poverty guidelines pertaining to welfare. Your family cannot make more than a certain amount of money and still qualify for welfare, so be sure that you fall within the income guidelines before applying.

    • 3). Request the required information packet. The packet should have information on how to properly fill out the paperwork and what forms of verification or identification are needed to process your application. Look over the packet and gather your information before going to your county DHS office to expedite the application process.

    • 4). Fill out the forms completely. You will be asked for your personal information, income or work history, family information, a list of your living expenses and any other sources of assistance you are receiving. Include all of this information on your application and sign all the required forms.

    • 5). Turn the paperwork in to your local DHS office. Feel free to ask the DHS worker any questions you might have, or clarify anything on your application you do not understand. The worker will review your information and stamp it for processing. The DHS caseworker will inform you of the approximate wait time you can expect before you will be notified of your application status.

    • 6). Check the mail for word from the Georgia DHS office. You will be notified whether your application was approved or denied, and will be given instructions on how to proceed. Review the letter to make sure your contact details and information were processed correctly.

    • 7). Call the number listed on the letter to follow up on your welfare status. If you are approved for any assistance, you will be told what programs you were processed into and what type of benefits you were granted. If you were denied welfare, the caseworker can explain to you why you were not approved and can inform you of any other options you might have.

    • 8). Accept your enrollment into the Georgia welfare system by contacting the programs you were approved for. They will give you detailed instructions on your specific programs and will inform you of your benefits. You will also be told of any identification or payment cards you can expect to receive and how those cards will need to be used. Ask questions and clarify any concerns you might have so you assure you get the most benefits out of your Georgia welfare assistance.
