How to Sew Table Top Curtains
- 1). Measure the table edge all around the top with the tape measure--on only three sides if people will be sitting at the table, or on all four sides if the table will be used for another purpose. Take this measurement and buy a strip of adhesive-backed Velcro stripping. For the fabric, triple this measurement to allow for gathering the table skirt, and include two extra inches for the hems on each side. Measure the length from the tabletop to the floor. Add in allowances for a hem at the top and at bottom of the table skirt. These measurements will be the size of the fabric you must buy to make the curtain.
- 2). Peel the backing off the Velcro stripping and attach it to the table edge on all sides where there will be a skirt.
- 3). Sew, either by hand or by machine, a long-basting stitch on the top of the table skirt, leaving the threads long at each end. Pull the threads to gather the fabric. Hold the fabric up to the table edge, and adjust the gathering to fit.
- 4). Hem the fabric on all four sides, either by hand or on a sewing machine.
- 5). Sew the other side of the Velcro stripping to the inside of the gathered edge of the table skirt, and attach it to the table.
