    • 1). Open the hood and secure it in place. Locate the belt routing diagram that provides the instructions for installing the new serpentine belt. The diagram will be located near the hood locking latch that is on top of the plastic fan shroud.

    • 2). Locate the automatic tensioner device that holds the tension on the belt. The serpentine belt is routed under the pulley that is attached to the automatic tensioner device. Use the bolt in the middle portion of the pulley for turning the tensioner.

    • 3). Rotate the tensioner device pulley counterclockwise with the 3/8-inch drive serpentine belt removal tool and a 3/8-inch socket.

    • 4). Pull the belt out from under the tensioner device pulley. Then, pull the belt off all the other pulleys. Pull the belt around each fan blade and out of the engine area.

    • 5). Slide the new belt around each blade. Then route the new belt around each pulley as instructed by the routing diagram. Leave the fan pulley as the last pulley to place the belt around.

    • 6). Rotate the automatic tensioner device pulley counterclockwise with the tool and the socket again. Then, route the new belt over the top of the fan pulley. Release the automatic tensioner pulley and it will pull the belt to the proper tension.

    • 7). Remove the tool from the pulley. Look over the belt to ensure that the belt has been routed correctly around each pulley.

    • 8). Crank the 1994 BMW 740iL and let the motor run for about 30 seconds. Turn the motor off and inspect the belt again just to be sure that the belt is secure inside all of the pulleys. Close the hood.
