- 1). Attend a four-year college that offers a degree in biological sciences or animal science. A bachelor's degree in one of these areas is required to move on to further education and a career working with animals.
- 2). Graduate from a veterinarian school with a doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. This degree is required if you intend to work as a veterinarian, either in private practice or with a zoo or nature preserve.
- 3). Volunteer at a zoo or veterinary clinic throughout your schooling to gain experience and show an interest in the field. What you learn through practice will complement what you learn in your classes.
- 4). Work as a veterinary assistant or complete a one-year internship once you have obtained your Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. This gives you additional experience and can even get your foot in the door for a permanent job.
- 5). Seek an entry level job in a zoo or at a nature preserve if that is where you prefer to work. In these jobs, you will most likely have to move up through the ranks to achieve the position you seek. Through hard work and persistence, you can earn promotions to reach the jobs that work closely with the animals.
