How to Attach Fabric Stripes to a Painted Wall

    Preparation

    • 1). Assess potential damage starching could do to the painted wall. Using the steps below, test a small piece of fabric on a small section of your wall before proceeding with a larger section. Allow the fabric to dry completely before gently pulling it off.

    • 2). Wash and dry the fabric you are going to use before applying it to the wall. Unwashed fabrics may bleed when damp, resulting in permanent ink spots to the painted wall.

    • 3). Cut the fabric into strips, each no larger than 4 inches by 2 feet.

    • 4). Spray each strip with spray starch, and iron the fabric to set it. This will stiffen the strips and make them more manageable when it comes time to apply them to the wall.

    • 5). Pour liquid starch into the Tupperware container and get your paint brush ready.

    Application

    • 1). Paint the wall with the liquid starch, section by section; apply the fabric strips as you go along. Make sure to overlap the strips, as they shrink slightly when they dry. After you have applied a small cluster of strips to the wall, paint over them with starch to secure them into place.

    • 2). Allow wall to dry completely.

    • 3). Use scissors or a utility knife to trim any extra fabric on the top or bottom of the strips.

    • 4). Mix a teaspoon of dishwashing detergent (liquid or powder) in a bucket of lukewarm water. Dip a sponge in the mixture and use it to gently wash away any starch build-up or unwanted residue.
