How to Replace the Valve Top on a Trumpet
- 1). Remove the valve from the valve casing by turning the valve cap attached to the valve casing counterclockwise and pulling up on the valve.
- 2). Wrap a cloth around the valve, and hold firmly with your left hand. Grab the valve top in your right hand, and twist to loosen the valve top from the valve stem.
- 3). Turn the valve top to the right until the valve top comes off completely. Hold on to the valve top carefully; valve tops have a tendency to fall off to the side because the bottom of the screw is rounded.
- 4). Reinstall your new valve cap by positioning it on top of the valve stem and screwing it in place turning in a clockwise motion, to the left.
- 5). Apply valve oil to the valve. Spread the oil along the length and sides of the valve to coat the entire valve in oil.
- 6). Place the valve back in the valve casing. Look for the number on the stem to ensure the valve goes in the proper casing. The first valve will be labeled with a one and will go into the valve closest to the mouthpiece opening.
- 7). Turn the valve cap clockwise to secure the valve in place.
