How to Obtain Arrest Records
- 1). Call the police department in the area where the crime occurred and request a copy of the arrest records for the person whose arrest records you want to see. A searchable list of police precincts around the country is linked in Resources.
- 2). Explain your reason for wanting to view the arrest records and ask whether you are eligible. If you’re a person listed on the records, you will certainly be able to see them. If you have no documented interest in the case, they may not give you access to the records.
- 3). Mail a copy of your photo ID, a request to view the records, a written statement of why you want them and a copy of your personal residential information to the police precinct where the arrest occurred. Include a check for the cost of the record search, which the officer you speak to on the phone should confirm with you. You may have to appear in person or give details about the crime to see the arrest record.
- 4). Conduct a search on an online records site if you cannot obtain the arrest records from the police department. If you do a general record search using the name of the person whose records you want to view, you may be able to see the record immediately online. Several record search sites are linked in Resources.
- 5). Hire a detective. Though they may not be able to access the records, many people who specialize in investigations have access to databases and contacts that lay people do not have.
