Cake Decorating Ideas for a Garden Cake Stand
- Choose a white frosting to create a basket weave pattern along the sides of the cake. On the top of the cake, use sugar flowers or decorated eggs like they are in a basket. Another idea is to use the elements from the cake stand to decorate the sides of the cake. Then, use large fondant letters you've allowed to dry to spell out a monogram as a cake topper.
- Decorate each tier of the cake with a different insect to create a lively garden cake crawling with insects. Add elements to each tier that are associated with that insect, such as a honeycomb pattern in a bright yellow if using bees. Butterflies are a popular garden theme insect -- pick a pastel color for the cake and make fondant butterflies to accent all around. If not using a multi-tier cake, consider adding smaller versions of a few different insects dotted all around the cake and on the stand.
- A garden isn't complete without flowers. Create a cascade of blooms that get larger with each tier, or make a larger bloom for a topper and wind smaller blooms around the cake to the bottom. Mix and match flowers with coordinating colors, or pick one uniform shade for all of the blooms that coordinate with your event. Live flowers not only visually decorate a cake, they smell nice also. These can be grouped similar to a bouquet or arrangement and will stay fresh during your event.
- Accent a garden theme cake with magical sculpted fairies. Whether they be three-dimensional or cut from fondant, fairies add a touch of whimsy to a cake. Hide fairies behind flowers or other elements to surprise guests as they are viewing the cake. Small, positionable dolls can easily be added to any cake instead of sculpted elements. Add plenty of over-sized blooms to make the fairies seem small in comparison.
