How to Decorate an Open Basement
- 1). Take measurements of the area to better evaluate how to set the room up into different areas, such as for television viewing or a reading corner.
- 2). Add screens or other dividers to visually separate one area of the basement from another, if desired.
- 3). Evaluate the area for lighting, as many basements are drab spaces in need of an infusion of light. Use track or recessed lighting, if needed, for more light.
- 4). Decide on a color scheme and paint three of the room’s four walls in the main color. Use a different hue of the selected color to paint the final wall, making it a focal wall. Paint the area around a fireplace, if one is present, in the secondary color.
- 5). Make a focal point in the basement, in the absence of a fireplace, using built-in bookcases or a media center. Create the look of built-ins with prefabricated pieces. Paint the focal piece in a color that complements the shade on the wall.
- 6). Place an area rug in the middle of the seating area to pull this portion of the room together. Use colorful pillows or a slipcover to add pops of color that coordinate with the hues in the room.
