History:
The Greenville County Museum of Art in Greenville, SC originated in 1935 with the formation of the Greenville Fine Arts League.
Years later, in 1958, the League secured a permanent location when they purchased the Gassaway Mansion.
In March 1974, a new facility of nearly 70,000 square feet to house the collection opened to the public.
"In 1995 the GCMA published a book, The Southern Collection, which includes 126 essays about 146 different works in the collection."
The Museum received accreditation from American Association of Museums in 1973, and was renewed in 1986, 1998, and 2009.
