How to Convert My iPod From One File to Another
- 1). Open iTunes software and connect your iPod to your computer. The iPod will appear under the Devices heading of the library and playlist column at the left of the application window.
- 2). Click the "Music" icon underneath the iPod icon beneath the "Devices" heading and identify the song files you want to convert. If you cannot see the file type for each song, select "View" followed by "View Options" and check the "Kind" box. This will display the file type.
- 3). Select the "Music" icon from your iTunes library instead of on your iPod and locate the songs you identified previously in the library. Highlight them by clicking on them. You can highlight a contiguous list by clicking the first song in a list and holding the Shift key while clicking on the last song. You can highlight noncontiguous songs by holding the Ctrl key while clicking (Command key on a Mac).
- 4). Open the Preferences menu in iTunes ("Edit" and then "Preferences" for Windows, "iTunes" and then "Preferences" for Mac). Under the General icon, select "Import Settings" and adjust the "Import Using" drop-down to the file type you want to convert your songs to. Click "OK" in that dialogue box and then again in the Preferences box.
- 5). Select "Advanced" and then "Create ___ Version" (based on the file type you set in Preferences). This will create versions of the songs you highlighted in the file type you selected.
- 6). Return to the "Music" icon beneath your iPod and remove the songs you have made converted copies of by highlighting them and typing Backspace (Delete on a Mac). This deletes the songs from your iPod but not your iTunes library. You will replace the songs with the converted files you have created.
- 7). Identify the newly converted files in your iTunes music library and highlight them. You can differentiate them from the original files by looking at the "Kind" heading.
- 8). Click and drag one of the highlighted files to the iPod icon in the left-hand column. This will drag all your highlighted files and add them to your iPod. The files on your iPod are now the converted versions of your original songs.
