How to Customize & Design Your Own Hat

1). Sketch shape ideas for design elements with a pencil and paper. Avoid complicated shapes---concentrate on simple, bold shapes.
2). Choose one shape to place in the center of your hat and cut that shape out of colored fabric. Cut out some smaller shapes as well.
3). Draw a large motif on your large central fabric piece, using a fabric marker. Choose a simple symbol or shape: the outline of a tree, the first initial of your name, or your zodiac sign animal.
4). Attach your fabric shapes to your hat with fabric glue. Press the fabric to your hat for one minute after gluing.
5). Decorate the spaces between your fabric shapes with fabric marker. If you have a needle and thread, add some simple embroidery to the hat with colored thread. The contrast between the fabric shapes, the marker lines, and the colored thread will add visual interest to your hat.
