How to Make a Passport Cover

    • 1). Open your passport so it is lying flat with the front and back facing up. Measure the length and width of the passport as lies flat. Add 1/2 inch to both the length and width measurement.

    • 2). Cut a piece of outer fabric and a piece of lining fabric that are the dimensions you measured in step one (plus seam allowance).

    • 3). Place the outer fabric onto a flat work surface with the right side facing up. Place the lining fabric over the outer fabric with the wrong side facing up. Align the corners and edges and pin the two fabrics together to hold them.

    • 4). Stitch around the edges using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Leave a 3-inch opening for turning the cover to the right side.

    • 5). Turn the passport cover right side out through the opening. Pull out the corners so they are pointed and make sure the edges are all straight and even.

    • 6). Iron the passport cover, turning in the seam allowance along the gap you left open as you press.

    • 7). Topstitch around the entire outer edge of the passport cover, stitching the gap you left open for turning closed as you sew. Make your topstitching 1/4 inch away from the outer edge of the passport cover.

    • 8). Measure diagonally across a corner of the passport cover, approximately 1 1/2 inches up from a corner. Note the length from the two straight edges across the diagonal line and add 1 inch to this measurement.

    • 9). Cut four pieces of ribbon to the length you previously measured.

    • 10

Open the passport cover and lay it flat so the lining side is facing up.

Position a piece of ribbon diagonally across any corner 1 1/2 inches up from the corner (at the point you measured in step eight). Fold the raw edges of the ribbon under 1/2 inch and pin the ribbon in place across the corner. Stitch the ribbon to the passport cover along each folded raw edge to make a loop that will hold the passport in place.

Repeat with the other three pieces of ribbon on the other three corners of the passport cover. You now have loops that will hold the passport in place inside the cover.

Find the halfway point in the passport cover where you will fold it around the passport. Mark this point at the top and bottom edges of the passport cover. Stitch a vertical line from the top mark to the bottom mark.

Insert your passport into the passport cover, using the corner loops to hold the passport in place.
