    • 1). Determine flight and lodging information and trip dates. Before acquiring the paperwork necessary to travel to St. Petersburg, American travelers must determine when and where they will stay while in the city. The city's Pulkovo International airport offers service from international airlines and accommodations are available throughout the city and offer a variety of prices and amenities.

    • 2). Obtain sponsor information. All American travelers in St. Petersburg must have a Russian sponsor. Sponsors are typically hotels, tour companies or a Russian relative in St. Petersburg. The sponsor typically sends an invitation letter expressing the dates of a stay. The sponsor's name will be indicated on the visa and the sponsor is responsible for assisting with any visa problems travelers may have while in the city, according to the US Department of State (DOS). Travelers must have their sponsor's contact information before applying for a visa and while traveling in Russia.

    • 3). Apply for a visa. Visas for Americans visiting St. Petersburg must be applied for through the Russian embassy or consulate office and in advance of the trip. Visas are usually granted for the dates listed in the sponsor's letter and are only valid for the dates listed on the visa. The DOS notes that visa extensions are not permitted except in emergency situations. Ensure that the dates listed and reason for travel are accurate when your visa is issued.

    • 4). Register with the United States Consulate. The DOS suggests that all American travelers register with the US Consulate in St. Petersburg when planning a trip to the city. Registration with the consulate allows them to provide any important information and may help family and friends maintain contact in an emergency.

    • 5). Complete a migration card upon arrival in Russia. Migration cards are often distributed on flights landing in Russia but are not always pointed out to travelers, according to the DOS. Complete both parts of the card and give one part to immigration officers at the airport, or other port of entry. You must keep the other portion of the card with you for the length of your stay in St. Petersburg and surrender it to officials upon leaving the country.

    • 6). Register your visa. All travelers spending more than three days in the city must register their visa and migration card with their sponsor. According to the DOS most hotels ask for the information and register travelers on the first day of their stay. Russian police may request travel documentation at any time, so it is suggested that travelers carry their passport, visa and migration card with them when out in St. Petersburg.
