How to Donate Books in Massachusetts

    • 1). Contact local high school libraries or community organizations such as retirement facilities. High school libraries and retirement facilities often rely on donations from the public to supply new titles. You can find contact information for local high schools online.

The Massachusetts-based website Got Books? (see Resources) lists high schools and groups that accept donations. Groups as different as Algonquin High School in Northborough and the Stow Friends of the Council of Aging in Stow post book donation requests on this site.

    • 2). Send your books to public libraries. Public libraries will take books of good quality and then shelve the ones they need. The Holliston Public Library in eastern Massachusetts, for example, has a 24-hour drop box for book donations. Public libraries often sell off extra copies to patrons and use the profits for operating expenses.

    • 3). Contact the Reading Tree, a non-profit organization that collects books in Massachusetts and Utah and sends them to schools and libraries across the world. The Reading Tree (see Resources) has dozens of locations, including one in Springfield and one in Worcester.

    • 4). Find charities with missions you want to support. These charities sort donated books and deliver them to recipients in the United States and around the world. For instance, the Help Kenya Project ships books to Kenya, and Books for Troops supplies books to U.S. soldiers abroad. (See Resources.)

    • 5). Call used bookstores in Massachusetts to see if they are accepting donations. The state has a reputation for lots of used bookstores. Many bookstores don't accept donated books, but this depends on the store, the title and the book's condition.
