The 13th birthday is one of those milestones in life that people anticipate, remember and cherish. The celebrant is enjoying becoming a teenager and the birthday party must reflect that change while still indulging the kid who enjoys a good time with his friends. Consult with your child on the type of games that his age group finds enjoyable and most importantly, will not embarrass him in front of his friends. - This birthday party is not a typical kid's party, but is appropriate for any age. Send out e-mail invitations well ahead for a luau party. Ask guests to dress in clothes with a tropical, Hawaiian theme. Encourage the guests to shop dollar stores as well as make their own simple party clothes. Direct them to websites that give ideas to for inexpensive sandals, sarongs, leis and leaf head wear. Stage a humorous fashion contest where each guest parades down a catwalk and the most over-the-top costume wins a goofy prize. Hawaiian music and plenty of lawn chairs are essential. A table full of tropical appetizers completes the theme. Exotic and entertaining snacks such as poi, barbecued chicken wings and grilled teriyaki ribs set the stage. The idea is to provide luau snacks, not a meal. Limbo stick competitions and an adult volunteer to show everyone the basics of hula dancing add to the fun -- especially if everyone is asked to perform at one time -- before the individual competition. A swimming pool is a wonderful addition but certainly not a necessity. The luau party can be set up indoors if the weather doesn't cooperate.
- A black-light blowout party gets the guests involved before the party even begins. Send out invitations explaining the black-light theme and which colors highlight the individual's clothes when under a black ight. Encourage the guests to wear wildly decorated clothing decorated in designs drawn with petroleum jelly which glows in the dark, including neon colored face paint, necklaces and other apparel that will make them stand out from the group. Use neon tape on the floor to mark as many lanes as possible to set up a black-light bowling alley. Neon painted milk jugs work well as pins and a neon painted softball becomes the bowling ball. Divide the group up into teams of two and have one team member place a white styrofoam cup --which will glow -- on top of their head and stand on a plastic tarp. The other team member uses a water gun -- loaded with tonic water, which glows - to shoot it off. Every squirt will glow wherever it strikes. The black-light blowout theme provides a tremendous opportunity to decorate the cake and table setting with neon colors.
- A games of skill party is perfect for kids this age because they like action and competition especially when there is a reward for the winners. Divide the guests into two even numbered groups. Different competitive games are arranged around three walls in a U shape. These games consist of breaking a balloon with a thrown dart, knocking down strofoam cups with a powerful single shot water gun, bowling with a softball to knock down milk jugs serving as pins, tossing a beach ball into a bucket and a number of other interesting games of skill that you devise. An adult keeps scores for each individual player and one point is assigned each time a task is accomplished correctly. The team with the most points wins a small prize suggested by the birthday kid. A playoff is next with the three highest scoring players on each team running the course again with the spectators cheering them on. The guest with the highest score wins the grand prize. Absorbent material or a plastic tarp will need to be laid down for the water gun competition if the party is conducted indoors.
