Here's 5 guidelines to get started on the journey that will transform your life.

Clearly define the REASON you are wanting to lose weight: you must know why are walking this path, what is the underlying force pushing you on to keep you motivated.
Is it to feel healthier again or to improve self image? You must be crystal clear on WHY you want to weigh less.
2.
Link massive PAIN to your current situation: you will not achieve your goal if you're comfortable.
You need to have a burning desire to change yourself, a drive to make you DO it.

To do it healthily and effectively, it is a combination of diet and exercise: going on complete diet does not work without exercise and exercising regularly while not paying attention to what and how much you eat is both bad for the body, also impossible to sustain in the long run.
It is therefore crucial a balance of both is required to be successful.
4.
Find a partner: Finding someone else wanting to kill fat is beneficial to both of you as having someone else on the same journey can keep you motivated and making the overall process easier.
You can both share the experience and have a laugh about it, lowering the stress level which really helps.
5.
Consistency beats "activity spikes": having a planned scheduled of exercises and sticking to it is better than choosing a random day and working out until almost fainting.
You will only last by consistently sticking to the schedule.
