My GE Washer Has a Noisy Spin
- Your GE washing machine normally makes some noise during the spin cycle. If it's producing a lot of noise, check the load. An unbalanced load causes a thumping noise, and it can even cause your washing machine to vibrate. Open up the lid, and rearrange the load so that it's more even. Separate heavy and light clothing. If you are washing one or two large items, add a few smaller items to offset the large items. Add a few towels to an extremely small load of clothing.
- If your washing machine isn't level, it creates a lot of noise, especially during the spin cycle. Your GE washing machine virtually walks across the floor. Check that the leveling legs are touching the floor. Each leg must take on 25 percent of the weight of the washing machine. Test this by rocking the washing machine diagonally on each side. If it is not level, adjust the legs either up or down, and tighten the jam nuts. If the floor is uneven or unstable, repair it before reinstalling the washing machine. Alternatively, insert a piece of plywood, about 3/4 inch thick, underneath the washer.
- Your GE washer has a pump located in the main housing and a pump filter located on the base of the washing machine. The pump can get clogged with debris or clothing, and dirt builds up in the filter over time. If these components are dirty, the spin cycle can get noisy. Pull out the pump filter from the washing machine, and clean off the dirt. Disconnect the washer from the power supply, and remove the main access panel. Use tweezers or needle-nose pliers to remove any clothing caught in the pump or the tube connected to it.
- Worn or broken components inside your washing machine also create a noisy spin cycle. Remove the power cord from the outlet, and open up the main housing. Examine the tub bearing, transmission, air bell screw, hub nut and air bell coupling. Tighten the screw and nut if they are loose. See if the bearing, coupling and transmission are extremely worn or have broken parts. You must replace these components since they are difficult to repair. Order replacement parts from a GE parts dealer.
