How to Open an iMac Computer
- 1). Spread out an anti-static mat on a flat surface and place the iMac face-down on the mat. Put the anti-static wristband around your wrist and attach the cord to a corner of the anti-static mat. Remove the Phillips screw from the middle of the vented metal panel on the back of your iMac and lift the panel out of the case.
- 2). Pull out the black plastic tabs to access the RAM cards. Remove each card and set it to the side, along with the metal panel.
- 3). Turn your iMac over so that the plastic screen covering is facing up. Attach a suction cup to each corner of the plastic covering and pull them gently to lift the covering off the case. Leave the suction cups attached to the covering.
- 4). Remove the Torx screws around the rim of the LCD panel with a T8 Torx screwdriver. The two longest screws belong on either side of the Apple logo at the bottom of the screen. Begin pulling gently on the aluminum case to separate it from the display, and pull out the wire connecting the iSight camera to the case.
- 5). Take out the rest of the T8 Torx screws holding the display to the logic board. Lift the display away from the case to expose three connections to the logic board.
- 6). Look under the display for a connector near the fan and pull it up to disconnect it. Lift up the display to reveal two more connectors between the board and the display. Pull these connectors out to completely remove the display and set it aside.
- 7). Remove the T8 Torx screws holding the hard drive to the logic board. Lift off the tape holding the wires to the hard drive and take out the plastic hard drive enclosure. Slide the hard drive out of the enclosure and disconnect the power and ATA cables.
- 8). Use a T6 Torx screwdriver to remove the screws in the side of the hard drive. If you are replacing the hard drive, screw these into your replacement drive before reassembling the enclosure.
