- 1). Download a free video-converter application.
- 2). Install the converter on your computer, and then launch it.
- 3). Click "File" > "Open." Navigate to the MP4 file on your hard drive. You may also be able to drag the MP4 file from a folder on the hard drive into the video-converter application's task window.
- 4). Click on the option for where to store the exported AVI file on your computer. You could make a folder and name it "Converted Videos" to help you keep track of them.
- 5). Click on the file type export-settings list or pull-down menu and select "AVI" from the list of options. Select an option to export a reduced file size if you want to make the AVI smaller than the original MP4.
- 6). Click on "Start" > "Convert" or a similar command to start converting the file. When it has finished converting, the file will appear in the folder you designated.
