Iphoto Alternatives

No two products, even if they are intended to provide precisely the same kind of service, are exactly alike. This is the reason why we have so many brands of, say, laptops, cameras, cell phones, and software applications.

It is always a good idea to compare competing brands of any product. If you are a manufacturer, discovering the strong points of your competitor's product helps you pinpoint what to improve in yours. If you are a customer, such comparison helps you make a better choice.

Among the photo management software available, iPhoto is a familiar name. As with every other software, though, there is competition.

Picasa

One is Picasa. One of the best things about Picasa is it is free from Google. With it you can organize your photos and create albums, add name tags to people's photos which then automatically find similar faces in your files. You can print photos and create photo collages or slideshows. You can also share your photos online, all or only a selection. Photo editing is also available such as red-eye removal, color enhancement, or exposure correction. It also has geo-tags which use Google Maps to put your pictures on the map.

Photo Mechanic

Another photo management software is Photo Mechanic. Perhaps because it appears meant for professional work, it is less popular than Picasa. Photo Mechanic imports photos using Live Ingest which streamlines and speeds copying and adds metadata to each file. Editing is available. You can rotate, copy, resize, preview, or rename your photo files. It also has a Set GPS Coordinates feature allowing you to locate your photos on a map. In a Contact Sheet view are thumbnailed images from your folders which may be exported via an FTP to a server, Email. They may also be printed. They can also be uploaded to Amazon S3, Flickr, DF Studio, Gallery 2, ExposureManager, SmugMug, and Zenfolio.

Which One?

You'll notice that all three have practically the same features. Deciding which one is best for you can only be made by you. A lot of it will depend on your personal tastes and prejudices. And perhaps even on your mood when actually deciding.
