How to Arrange Dishes on a Open Hutch
- 1). Pick objects for the focal point on each shelf of your open hutch. Remember that you do not have to store only dishes in open hutches. The items can be anything that goes with the theme of the dining room, kitchen or other room where the hutch sits.
- 2). Place a focal piece onto the center of each shelf. This can be a large, decorative platter, a silver teapot service, an antique clock, a gravy boat or any item you desire. Many hutches have plate grooves to enable platters or other plates to stand without falling. If not, use a plate holder to display the piece.
- 3). Hang teacups or mugs down from the top of the back wall. Your hutch may already have screws in place to do this. If not, use small screw hooks that you can twist into the bottom section of the shelf above it, or high on the back wall area. Another idea is to hang the screw hooks on the ends of each shelf so that the cups are actually outside of the hutch. This adds depth to the open hutch.
- 4). Place tall or bulky items on each end of the shelves. This gives the hutch visual balance.
- 5). Stack books, magazines or other flat items on the shelves if you need to elevate certain dishes. Cover the books or other flat items with a decorative cloth that coordinates with the theme. For instance, if you have Victorian-looking dishes, a lace table runner makes an effective base for them and disguises the books. If you have dishes with a silver or gold rim, using a gold lame cloth will accent the color and add an elegant look to the hutch area.
