How to Convert Photos to Digital

    • 1). Place the digital photo on the scanner. Press the "Scan" button on your scanner. This starts the scanner and it copies the photo from the device to a file on the computer.

    • 2). Open the file saved on the computer hard drive from the scanner. The file opens in your default software program. If you have a paid software application installed like PaintShop Pro or Photoshop, then you have more options to manipulate the files. For people who do not have added graphics software, open the file in the default application such as Microsoft Paint.

    • 3). Crop the image by highlighting the parts of the image you want to save. For instance, if you want to save a head shot in the photo, use the software's highlighting tool to surround the head shot of the person in the image. Crop the image and save the file to a new location on the hard drive. This saves the specified part of the photo without overwriting the originally scanned image.

    • 4). Email the cropped images to friends and family. You can also use the image as a background for your computer, or you can simply save it on the hard drive. To ensure you don't lose the images, back up the files to a CD-ROM or flash drive.
