    Residency and Age Requirements

    • Notaries in Maine must be 18 years old at the time of the appointment and residents of the state. The notary can also be from a neighboring state and work in Maine. Residents of adjoining states must submit an affidavit along with a notary application for consideration for the office. The affidavit must be from the employer of the applicant, which states the business is licensed by the state of Maine and that the applicant works in the business regularly. Self-employed applicants must submit an affidavit stating the notary applicant is licensed or registered to do business in Maine. The self-employed applicant must have a business address in Maine.

    Written Examination

    • The Maine Secretary of State administers an examination to applicants for a notary office, which ensures the applicant is fit to serve as a notary public. The examination requires applicants to describe the steps to notarizing a document. The test also consists of true-or-false and multiple-choice questions. Applicants must answer questions on the duties of the notary public in Maine, such as the forms of identification acceptable when notarizing a document or the records that the notary must maintain. The test also contains questions about the process of becoming a notary public in Maine, such as the office holder who performs the oath of office.

    Background

    • A notary public applicant in Maine must not have had a previous appointment as a notary revoked for misconduct in any state within the last five years. The applicant must not have been convicted of a crime that carries a minimum of a one-year prison term in the last 10 years.

    Oath of Office

    • Applicants for a notary office must take the oath of office within 30 days of receiving the appointment. The oath must take place before a Dedimus Justice in Mane and submit a certificate of qualification within 45 days of receiving the appointment.

    Term and Renewal

    • The notary office is valid for a term of seven years in Maine. Notaries must complete an application for renewal at the end of the term.
