It happened when a specific person or group with a common goal used passion and diligence to break down a difficult obstacle and succeed. Our first president of the United States, George Washington and other founding fathers contested England's dominance, had foresight and inspiration to see the future and freedoms for their new nation, and fought against the most powerful army at that time. Also, Abraham Lincoln sacrificed and fought for the cause of providing equal rights, liberty and democracy to all citizens.
But, can organizations and/or businesses also pinpoint upon vital matters or likelihoods and produce a positive and influential improvement? Obviously the conclusion is "yes." Think about the explosion and growth of technology in how we communicate. One of the most critical events in history occurred when Joannes Gutenberg took his inspiration and made it a reality when he built the first printing press in 1450. This singularly provided an opportunity for millions to learn to read. Contemplate the progress created from the telegraph, telephones, radio, television, communication satellites, personal computers and the internet. A major change in our world occurred from each of these breakthroughs.
A current evaluation from Deloitte verifies that businesses that choose to center not just on profits but also on a "culture of purpose" are much more successful. They found the majority or ninety percent of those evaluated are of the opinion that their institution has a clear focus on having a purpose driven environment and the company clearly benefits from this financially. Plus it receives increased employee and customer approval ratings. But, the report also shows that the majority employees do not think employers are doing well at building an atmosphere focused on a higher purpose.
Countless Opportunities
For virtually all obstacles and in most fields of pursuit there are many ways to both create a compelling achievement for others and to build a prosperous livelihood. A key advantage of owning your own business vs. working for someone else, are the options to be more open to ideas and the freedom to choose projects that have more relevance and purpose. Most businesses are filled with bureaucracy and brown nosing to get ahead, although on the outside management claims they are establishing a positive influence, it isn't happening.
Start by Working Backwards
The best route is to begin by singling out key problems where you can create an improvement. Then with the end in mind, think about what are the main causes of the problem and what specific changes will bring a significant solution. Remember to also analyze if there is enough revenue to provide a profitable living.
Let's choose to focus on the issue of unemployment. After careful review and research of the key obstacles and reasons for long-term unemployment we might decide that economic improvement, struggle to stay motivated and lack of education are the main areas to focus on. Then you could build a consulting business to work with local, state, and national agencies to develop influential economic improvement programs. Or, you could create a training and mentoring system to improve the personal motivation, educational and training concerns. You might disagree because government programs exist in the area of helping those out of work. But, do these programs really effectively help the unemployed? The answer could be yes in some instances, but generally the issue still lives on. Ask yourself if you could become an expert in best practices, and consult/educate government, non-profit, community, educational and other organizations to change and learn to solve and improve the problem? Could you create training and systems to support these organizations?
Now consider another issue of the relationship between the Middle East and the United States. What if you are strongly familiar with the cultures, former and current government policies, and you know the key reasons of the extreme tensions and desire to focus on building a positive relationship. As in the example above, a business opportunity could be created to consult and assist government-sponsored agencies, foreign governments, development banks, international ventures, non-profit organizations, and so forth.
