    • 1). Choose uniforms for your color guard team. The uniforms should look professional and clean. Have the members try on their uniforms to make sure that they fit properly. Have them walk around and march to see if the uniforms are comfortable enough.

    • 2). Have the color guard team members hold their flags while wearing their flag harnesses. Each member should have a flag for himself. Make sure that the flag and harness fit comfortably and are not too heavy for the team members.

    • 3). Choose a color guard leader who has a strong voice and can project through a crowded room. Have the team practice how to go through the ceremony. First, the leader should loudly say, "Color guard, attention," followed by "Audience, please rise." The leader should say, "Color guard, forward march." The color guard members should march to the front of the area.

    • 4). Have the leader say, "Color guard, halt," when the members reach the front of the area. Then, he or she should say, "Color guard, cross the colors." The members must post the flags, one at a time. To do this, a member must tilt one flag at a 45-degree angle. The members should lead the audience in the pledge to that flag. When the pledge is finished, the next flag should be posted, and so on until the flags have all been posted.

    • 5). Have the leader say, "Color guard, about-face." The members should about-face and the leader should say, "Color guard, forward march." The team should march to the back of the area and the leader must say, "Color guard, halt," "Color guard, at ease," and "Audience, please be seated."

    • 6). Practice this routine until all the color guard members can perform the steps flawlessly. Get the team dressed in uniforms and their harnesses, one flag per person, and have the color guard perform the formal flag ceremony.
