- 1). Go to your local craft store and purchase a canvas rug mat, choose one that has 1/4 inch holes.
- 2). Take old clothing, table cloth, maternity clothes or dresses and cut strips of 1/2-inch wide pieces of material.
- 3). Make the pieces of cloth long, you may sew the ends of your cloth together to achieve the width of your rug. Put all of the strips into a basket or tray next to you to use when you make the rug.
- 4). Turn the canvas over to make a hem. Fold down 1 inch on all sides, then take the sewing needles and thread and sew the hem on all four sides.
- 5). Start on the wrong side of the canvas. Starting in a corner, take a piece of fabric from the basket, and push the fabric through the first hole. Tie a small knot on the first strand; the knot will be on the wrong side of the canvas. Skip a hole on the canvas and push the material through the third hole. On the fourth hole use the crochet hook to pull the fabric through. This will make the rug look flush on the right side and skipping a hole on the reverse side. Continue until you get to the end of the row. At the end of the row the material should be on the wrong side of the canvas. Repeat this procedure until the rug is complete.
