How to Choose a New Dryer
- 1). Compare gas dryers and electric ones to decide which type of power source to start with. If you have a gas connection and a 240-volt outlet in your laundry room, consider a gas dryer, as they cost less to run than electric dryers. Electric dryers, however, are lower in cost up front and are a sound choice if you do not have a gas hookup.
- 2). Look for a model with a moisture sensor. A moisture sensor is more effective than a thermostat because it uses moisture levels instead of heat to shut off the dryer at the correct time.
- 3). Choose a model that is comparable in capacity to that of your washing machine. A dryer with a much higher capacity than your washer will cost you extra money without offering any real benefits. The capacity also needs to be at least as high as the capacity of your washer to avoid washed laundry from piling up while you wait for other clothes to dry.
- 4). Choose a dryer that has the drying cycles that you need, such as timed dry, cottons, delicate and auto sensor. Avoid giving in to the temptation to purchase a dryer with a touchscreen interface or designer styling unless it is really important to you to have those features, as they are almost completely cosmetic.
