- 1). Adjust the thermostat so the freezer compartment is at 0 degrees F. If your freezer does not have a digital temperature control, adjust the freezer dial to the halfway mark. Purchasing a freezer thermometer from your local hardware store will help you set an accurate temperature. Ice appears on the walls and food if the freezer is set too cold.
