    • 1). Adjust the thermostat so the freezer compartment is at 0 degrees F. If your freezer does not have a digital temperature control, adjust the freezer dial to the halfway mark. Purchasing a freezer thermometer from your local hardware store will help you set an accurate temperature. Ice appears on the walls and food if the freezer is set too cold.

    • 2). Try to reduce the amount of food in the freezer. You might find you have items that have spoiled or passed their expiration date that you can afford to discard. Packing the freezer compartment full of food creates conditions that allow ice to develop. Air must be allowed to circulate through the various packages in the freezer to prevent ice.

    • 3). Check the door rubber door seal, it should make contact with the frame of the refrigerator and provide a small amount of resistance when the handle is pulled if it is working properly. Look for signs of damage or sections that have lost their adhesive bond to the door. Any gap in the seal allows in moist air and causes ice to develop. Avoid leaving the door open for long periods of time during humid weather for this reason.
