How to Make a Boys Twin Bookcase Headboard
- 1). Measure the width of the bed, including the frame. Locate a bookshelf in your home that is 6 to 12 inches longer than the width of the bed.
- 2). Build columns. The columns will help to support the bookshelf. Cut medium-density fiberboard for the front and sides of the columns to a length of 3 or 4 feet, depending on the size of your child, and a width equal to the width of the bookshelf. Assemble the columns by placing one board flush against another. Use wood glue to keep the boards in place, and follow with 1 3/4-inch long medium-density fiberboard screws every 8 to 10 inches. Continue assembling the boards until you have two columns.
- 3). Cut a piece of medium-density fiberboard equal to the distance between the columns plus the width of the columns. Lay the board across the columns so that its edges are flush with the columns' edges. Drill 1 3/4-inch medium-density fiberboard screws into the board to secure the board to the columns. You should now have two columns supporting a board between them.
- 4). Attach the bookshelf to the columns. Flank the bed with the two columns you constructed at a distance near the length of the bookshelf; 1 to 2 inches of bookshelf overhang is fine. Lay the bookshelf on its side. Mount it on top of the board and columns. Drill 1-inch screws every inch to connect the bookshelf to the supporting columns and board.
- 5). Prime and paint the bookshelf headboard. Use a typical masculine color like primary blue or red.
- 6). Decorate the headboard. Line the bookshelf with masculine wallpaper or fabric, such as a geometric pattern or a black and white pattern. As an alternative, use decorative stickers or decals like cars or superheroes.
