How to Stop Eating Rice

    • 1). Examine your eating habits. Consider when and how you used to eat rice. Did you eat rice for lunch with a Thai curry or for dinner accompanying a plate of Mexican enchiladas? Make a list of the foods that are important to you where you will need to find a substitute accompaniment.

    • 2). Become familiar with cauliflower rice as a rice substitute. Cauliflower is low in carbohydrates and has a mild flavor, which makes it ideal as an accompaniment. Cauliflower is readily available at grocery stores across the nation. Cauliflower rice is essentially finely grated cauliflower that is seasoned to taste and lightly fried with a source of fat, such as olive oil, butter, usli ghee (Indian clarified butter) or even animal fats like lard. To grate the cauliflower, you can use the fine teeth of a cheese grater or the grater attachment of a food processor.

    • 3). Become familiar with quinoa as a rice substitute if you have a rice allergy, but not if you are following a low-carbohydrate diet. Quinoa is high in carbohydrates just like rice is. Quinoa is a grain-like seed that resembles couscous in its shape and mild nutty flavor. Quinoa can be found in health food stores and many large supermarkets. Quinoa can be prepared almost identically to any flavored or spiced rice recipe you might have, including pilaf, pulao and Mexican rice. To prepare quinoa, you should rinse the quinoa with water, drain it, toast the quinoa in a skillet for five minutes and then cook it as you would rice. Use two parts of water or liquid to one part of quinoa, and you can add herbs or spices as you would in your normal rice recipes. Bring the mixture to a boil, then cover and reduce heat. Simmer until the quinoa is tender and translucent.

    • 4). Consider where you can substitute rice for other side dishes completely. A dish such as a curry naturally seems to need a rice substitute to accompany it, but some dishes, like fajitas, don't necessarily need rice on the side. Make a list of substitutes that are acceptable to you, such as mix steamed vegetables and refried beans.
