How to Make Chord Bars for Autoharp
- 1). Cut a piece of solid wood 1/4-inch thick by 1/4-inch wide. The length should be matched to the scale of your autoharp.
- 2). Place the wood on top of the strings exactly as it will be when the bar is mounted to the springs and attached to the autoharp.
- 3). Mark out where each note in the chord is with a pencil. You will need to know some music theory to do this. For example, if you are emplacing an A minor chord bar, you will need to mark off all the A's, C's and E's on the board. If you are making a G7 chord bar, you will need to mark off all the G's, B's, D's and F's on the instrument.
- 4). Glue a strip of thick felt across the length of the wooden chord bar. Cut off any excess with a boxcutter-type knife.
- 5). Carefully cut a notch in the felt, matching the notches up with the marks you made with the pencil.
- 6). Test your work. Place the bar over a properly tuned autoharp and play it. It should sound the desired chord, without any extraneous notes.
