Making Dance Videos

    Equipment

    • Procure a camera that you will use to film your video. Ideally, you could use an expensive DV (Digital Video) camera that will allow you to transfer the footage to a computer easily. If necessary, use the video function on a digital camera or even a cell phone. You will also need lights, an empty space and, most important, music that makes you want to move.
Decide how ambitious you want to be with your video. If you're just going to start the camera and dance for it, you don't have to worry about camera movements. For a more impressive video with zooms and pans, you will probably need a friend to join the production.

    Artistry

    • Watch dance videos online to get a feel for the way the directors shoot them. For instance, you often see lots of long shots that allow the viewer to see the whole of the dancer's body. This allows you to appreciate the lines he is creating. You will also see things you don't like about dance videos (say, poor lighting), and you'll avoid these things in your own.

    Pre-production

    • Create a storyboard: a series of sketches that serve as a rough draft for your video. According to MediaCollege, there are approximately a dozen kinds of shots to choose from, including the extreme closeup and two-shot. Rehearse your dance as well as any camera movements you plan to do until both you and the camera person know them by heart.

    Filming

    • Start the camera and hoof it with all of your heart.

    Post-production

    • View the results of your shooting and edit your video for public consumption. According to Amit Agarwal, a technology blogger, Windows Movie Maker is one free option you have for editing your video. Lay in the song to which you danced as the audio track. If this sounds difficult, don't worry. There are lots of tutorials to help you learn to use the software, including ones from Microsoft.
Experiment with different lighting effects and consider adding your name and the title and writer of the song.
