How to Write & Publish Comics Books

    • 1). Create a story with original characters. Draw from what you know from comic books you've read throughout your life, as well as from literature, films and any type of non-fiction. Learn what makes a story great from other great stories. No idea is original, but blatant plagiarism shouldn't be your intent.

    • 2). Write to the artist. Comic book writers must tell instead of show. The first audience of the comic book writer is the artist, who needs specific direction in order to transform the story from words into pictures. Write clearly and get straight to the point. Describe everything you think the artist needs to know to bring your vision to life.

    • 3). Use the full-script method for entitling more power over the story to you as a writer. With this method, tell the artist where each panel will go on the page and who and what is happening in each.

    • 4). Use plot-art-dialogue to give the artist the most control over the story. Write a simple plot synopsis with character descriptions and settings. The artist then turns the plot into panels placed where he deems best and adds pacing and structure to the story.

    • 5). Simplify the writing by removing unnecessary words and sentences. The rule of thumb is to cut down text by 10 percent.

    • 6). Take the completed manuscript to a literary agent. An agent gives the writer a better chance at having his comic book picked up by a major publisher because few publishers accept submissions from authors without representation.

    • 7). Allow time for the agent to pitch the comic to different publishers. The submission process can be as short as a few days or as long as a few years.

    • 8). Consider the publisher's offer for the manuscript, which should include an advance and royalties, among other specifics. If the deal is agreeable, a contract will be issued for the agent to negotiate and writer to eventually sign.
