Some turntables can interface with computers and you can now have your precious vinyl collection immortalized in binary code. The ION TTUSB turntable seems to be a good example of that today. According to many people, including the iPod Observer website, the turntable performs quite well on the analog side of things, but not so much on the digital side. In other words, it is a quality record player if it is not hooked up to the computer. The digital and software side of this turntable seems to uncover a few problems that do not make digitizing an album collection very easy and, in fact, make it quite time-consuming. - The first problem with this turntable's digital mechanics is that it won't allow you to import the album onto your computer without first playing the album through, according to the iPod Observer website. This means hours and hours of work if you hope to digitize a record collection. This is not to mention the hassle of then getting those files into iTunes. They must be converted to a file that iTunes understands, then you have the task of organizing them.
- The digital mechanics of this turntable do not allow automatic tagging of audio files. This means that you must manually go in and edit each song to reflect the artist, song title and album title. It's just like you have to do in iTunes if you can't connect to the Internet to collect the song titles of a CD you are importing. Essentially, this takes extra time to digitize a record collection.
- Another time-consuming problem from this turntable is the task of splitting. It does not automatically split each stream into a song, so when the album is done digitizing you have one long sound file. You have to split up the songs to reflect the actual time.
