How to Kill Nematodes With Bleach and Ammonia
- 1). Carefully dig up the affected plant, keeping the roots intact. Shake loose soil from the plant. You can use a large paintbrush to brush away soil stuck to the roots.
- 2). Dig up the soil in the immediate vicinity of the plant. The more soil you can replace, the better your chances of minimizing the infestation. Place the soil in garbage bags and dispose.
- 3). In a bucket or tub, prepare an ammonia or bleach bath. If possible, use a 6.0 sodium hydrochlorite, unscented with no other additives. Mix the bleach or ammonia with water, approximately one part bleach or ammonia per ten parts water. Water close in temperature can help reduce shock to your plant, but hot water can help kill nematodes.
- 4). Submerge the plant in the bucket. Let it sit for 3 to 5 minutes and no longer than 15.
- 5). Rinse the plant thoroughly with fresh water to reduce bleaching.
- 6). Replant using fresh, new soil.
