Types of Draft Deferments

    Conscientious Objector Status

    • Conscientious objectors fall into two categories: those who are opposed to any kind of military service, whether in a combat or support role, and those who are willing to enlist in the military as long as they are not required to undergo arms training or be placed into combat. The first type (classified as 1-0) has the option of civil service, such as the Peace Corps, and the second (1-A-0) may fulfill his service obligations in a suitable non-combat military position. Applicants are required to explain their beliefs in person to a local board.

    Ministerial Students and Clergy

    • Ministerial students, classified as 2-D, would have the option of deferring military service if there were a draft. Similarly, ministers of religion (classification 4-D) would be exempt.

    Hardship

    • Classification 3-A is defined as men whose military service would cause an undue hardship or burden on dependent family members. Registrants who are already serving or going through the induction process are also eligible to apply for a temporary, six-month deferment under classification 3-A-S if they experience a change in their family status that creates a hardship (such as the death of a spouse when there are children.)

    Alien or Dual National Status

    • Some resident aliens and dual nationals would be eligible to apply for deferment under the 4-C classification if there were a draft. These would include men who have lived in the United States for less than a year, dual nationals from countries with agreements for military service exemptions, and non-citizens who have served in the military of a nation which participates in joint military exercises with the United States.
