Cedega is a conversion solution by TransGaming Technologies that allows Windows-based games to be played on Linux-based machines. The program adapts the code from the open-source Wine program-conversion project, which is widely supported. Many games will run on the service, some more accurately than others. - Sid Meier's award-winning series of civic-management simulations is more than an urban-planning or resource-management game: it's an interactive history lesson with difficulty controls. Players choose from a list of famous (and infamous) leaders from throughout history and attempt to guide their civilization from wandering in the wilderness to conquering the space age. "Civilization IV" runs best on Cedega 7.2.0, and should be installed in Windows 98-compatibility mode. For best performance, turn graphics to "Medium" or "Low" if the game slows down in the Modern Age and beyond (this is often necessary on the PC and Mac versions, too).
- The "Grand Theft Auto" games toned down their trademark tabloid violence with the release of "Vice City," a cinematic, neon-lit re-imagining of "Scarface" and "Miami Vice." However, though the urban action-adventure game may place less of an emphasis on sex and brutal violence, it's still not for kids, featuring a storyline involving drug trading, organized crime and brutal revenge. "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" runs well on Cedega 7.3.0 and above, though "Scheduling" should be disabled in the "Overrides" panel of the Cedega menu before running for best performance.
- It's hard to find a gamer who doesn't know "World of Warcraft," the massively multi-player online role-playing game (MMORPG) that brought online gaming to the mainstream like never before. Featuring a continuously updated roster of adventures and secrets, "World of Warcraft" remains a popular choice for millions of gamers worldwide. The game is playable on Cedega 7.2.0 and above, allowing Linux users to join the online adventures; it works best on compatibility mode for Windows XP. Some users may find the game works best with the "Full Screen Glow" and "Death Effect" options left unchecked in the in-game menu.
- An influential film-noir, third-person shooting game, "Max Payne" tells a story of tragedy, despair and redemption through well-turned tropes borrowed from the hard-boiled detective genre of films and literature. The game's use of "Matrix"-style slowdown effects during gun battles is much-imitated. "Max Payne" works best on Cedega 7.2.0 or above, and runs without glitches.
