    • 1). Shut down the virtual machine associated with the VMX file if it's running in VMware. Click the "Virtual Machine" menu in the VMware window, point to "Power" and select "Power Off" instead of "Suspend."

    • 2). Click "Start," select "Documents," double-click the "Virtual Machines" folder and double-click the folder name of the virtual machine you want to configure.

    • 3). Back up the virtual machine's VMX file by right-clicking it, clicking "Copy" and then right-clicking inside the folder and selecting "Paste." You can restore this backup of the VMX file if a problem occurs with the virtual machine after you edit its VMX file.

    • 4). Right-click the virtual machine's VMX file and select "Open With."

    • 5). Click the arrow to the right of Other Programs, select "Notepad" and click "OK."

    • 6). Modify the options in the VMX file. Each option is in the form "name = "value"" on its own line. You can change the value of an option by changing the "value" text. Add each new option on a new line in the text file.

    • 7). Click "File" at the top of the Notepad window and select "Save" to save the VMX file.
