Ideas for Front Yard Landscapes
- Most people plant their vegetable gardens in the back yard, but there's really no reason plants can't be grown in the front. Provided that your homeowner's association or condo rules don't prohibit vegetables in the front yard, you can go for it. Keep in mind that you may need to make provisions to keep out fauna like deer. Many backyards are fenced in, but your front yard may not be. Consider installing a deer fence or some other barrier to keep them out so you can keep your hard-earned treasure for yourself.
- Who says a front yard needs to be landscaped with grass? If your front yard is sloped or otherwise hard to mow, you may want to plant ground cover. Ground cover simply refers to plants that are short and spread out. Planting ground cover will relieve you of your mowing duties and provide a beautiful appearance. Choose plants that will tolerate a bit of trampling if people may periodically walk on your front lawn.
- Another drawback to the front yard is the lack of privacy. You can remedy this with landscaping options that provide seclusion. Sunflowers grow tall and have a striking appearance. Trellises covered in ivy also have an appealing look. Explore other tall structures or plants that can provide a blocked view of your front yard if you would like to have a cozy, relaxing space there.
- If you want to stick to traditional flowers and/or shrubs in the front yard, but don't know where to start, consider container gardening. Just about anything that can be grown in the ground can be grown in a container of some sort. There are window planters, pots, hanging baskets and much more to choose from. Using containers allows you to protect plants from frost easily by bringing them indoors. They also allow you the flexibility to switch some things around whenever you want to. You really can't make a permanent mistake with containers, as simply shifting a pot provides an easy fix. When one plant ceases to bloom, simply whip out another container with a different plant. Container gardening means less weeding, too. Whatever you choose for your front yard, make it suitable to your personal taste and have fun with it.
