How to Prepare Exterior Cedar for Behr Stain

    • 1). Clean the exterior cedar using a pressure washer. Begin on a low setting, and gradually increase pressure.

    • 2). Allow the cedar to dry out completely, and then sand the surface to promote stain penetration using 120-grit sandpaper. Sand with the grain of the cedar and never against it.

    • 3). Protect any areas of the exterior cedar from paint by covering them with blue painter's tape. Cover larger areas, like driveways, breezeways, porches and sidewalks, with plastic drop cloths. Lay heavy-duty fabric drop cloths on top of the plastic ones.

    • 4). Apply a coat of Behr stain to the exterior cedar using the paintbrush.

    • 5). Allow the stain to dry for three full hours, and then apply additional coats as necessary.
