How to: Washing Machine Maintenance

    • 1). Run your hand over the water hoses to see if you feel a leak -- the hoses are attached to the water spigots at one end and the water connectors on the back of the washing machine at the other end. If your hand is wet, isolate the tear in the hose, turn the water off and seal the leak using a plastic sealant repair kit. Leave the sealed hose alone for a day before turning the water back on.

    • 2). Place a spirit level on the top of the washing machine to check whether it is level. If the bubble is not between the two lines in the level, raise the front of the washing machine and insert wood blocks beneath it until the bubble is between the two lines.

    • 3). Slide the exhaust hose off the rails in which it is situated in the top or back of the washer. Wipe out the inside of the hose with a water-moistened paper towel. Pull out any loose dust balls or other contaminants from the hose. Repeat this procedure with another water-moistened paper towel and the hose socket on the top or back of the washing machine. Wipe the outside of the hose and socket before reattaching the hose.
