How to write an an argumentative paper is really pretty easy once you know the formula.
The main parts to include in an argumentative paper is the thesis, which is the topic of the paper; context, the part of the paper that determines its background or setting; support of your position; counter-arguments that you will need to refute; refutations.
The order you lay out these parts is mostly irrelevant aside from the thesis which should appear before you support your position.
  • Thesis: A good thesis is specific.
It conforms to fact and it is defensible.
Your thesis should be something that a person can either agree or disagree with.
Your job is to convert those who disagree to agree.
  • Context: Provide background information about the position your paper argues.
  • Support/Evidence: The support and evidence along with the thesis form the argument with the thesis as the conclusion.
  • Counter-arguments: In this part of your paper, you need to examine the reasons someone would disagree with your thesis, put yourself in your opponents shoes so to speak.
Write the best arguments against your thesis that you can think of down.
It is imperative that you can refute these arguments.
  • Refutations: This is where you refute the counter-arguments.
Explain why they are incorrect, or if they are not incorrect why they do not refute your thesis.
For example, if your thesis states cable TV is better then satellite TV, and your opponent states that satellite has more channels, you could write sure that is true, but cable is reliable even in a storm that would block out satellite.
Finally you need to proof read the paper.
Make sure all the details are correct.
Make sure all information fits together.
For example, time frame, location, and subject type remain consistent throughout the paper.
Spell check it.
Lastly read the paper out loud.
Listening to the paper can highlight sections that do not fit well together.
Following these guidelines, you should know how to write an argumentative paper without to much trouble.
Good Luck!
