How to Prevent Concrete Posts From Sinking

    • 1). Dig a hole with a fence post digger or a fence post auger. The cutters on the equipment create a perfect sized hole for the fence post. If installing a standard sized four-foot post, dig the hole to a depth of 21 inches. If installing a six-foot post, dig the hole to a depth of 30 inches. This will help you reach a solid surface inside the ground to create a stable starting point for your post.

    • 2). Pour six-inches of crushed gravel into the base of the hole and level it out.

    • 3). Tamp the surface of the gravel with a tamper to compact the gravel and create a hard surface. Although the gravel compacts tightly together, it will allow water to filter away from the concrete.

    • 4). Place the fence post in the center of the hole and prop it up vertically by leaning poles on either side of it to keep it upright.

    • 5). Fill the hole to within 2 inches of the top of the ground with cement. Using either Portland cement or fast drying cement will work but it is vital that you adhere to the mixing directions listed on the concrete packaging to ensure the concrete dries properly. Loose concrete will deteriorate faster than properly formed concrete.
