Terrific Tartan!

As the nights start to draw in and the weather turns colder, now is the time to think about making your home feel warm, cosy and welcoming.
Highland themes are continuing to be big news this winter, think of Scottish hunting lodges and use tartans to create a cosy feel.
You could either use traditional colours such as reds, greens and naturals or more contemporary colours such as hot pinks, raspberry and turquoise.
Tartans can be used as a curtain fabric, upholstery fabric or for cushions, depending on how much tartan you want to use and whether you are designing a complete new room scheme or just want to update and existing scheme.
An armchair upholstered in a tartan fabric would look great as a statement piece in a room.
To coordinate with tartan fabrics you could look for highland inspired fabrics such as those depicting hunting images, thistles or gamebirds.
These could also be used for curtains, upholstery or cushions.
Mix and match everything to create a relaxed feel, to keep the scheme feeling coordinated ensure that all your fabrics are in the same colour palette.
Another way to make your room feel cosy is to introduce lots of different textures, wooland velvet fabrics are the ideal choices.
Layer your textures, for example pile lots of cushions on your sofa, have a basket full of cosy woollen throws ready for you and your family to use on a cold winter evening.
Add a rug to the floor, essential if you have wooden or tiled floors.
The ultimate accessories to add a touch of the hunting lodge into your home is to look for items such as stag's heads.
If you don't want a real stag's head adorning your room (I wouldn't!), then there are replicas around made out of metal or even painted cardboard which would bring a quirky and fun feel to your room.
Other highland accessories would be cushions with images of highland cows or sheep on them.
If you are lucky enough to have a real fire then a basket of logs would look great, if you don't try using a basket of pine cones to bring a touch of the outside in and would also add to the cosiness of the scheme.
If the total highland theme is too much for you, then just add some tartan cushions and some wool throws to your existing scheme to bring comfort and cosiness into your home this winter.
