How to Extend Curtain Poles
- 1). Measure the width for the window area you wish to cover. Most curtain poles extend about 6 inches on both sides past the window casing. This allows you to pull the curtains completely back without blocking light from the window.
- 2). Hold one end of the telescoping curtain pole, and twist the opposite end to the left; this loosens the grip between the two sides of the pole. Slide the pole out or in to the desired length.
- 3). Twist the pole to the right to tighten the grip.
- 4). Center the curtain pole on the window and place the pole on the previously installed hardware brackets.
- 1). Measure the length you'll need for the curtain rod. Include the length needed on the outside of the window casing, generally about 3 inches past each side of the casing. Purchase two curtain rods that measure at least several inches past the needed length.
- 2). Cut the "return" end of one of the curtain rod extenders with a hacksaw. File any rough edges from the cut end of the curtain rod extender. This prevents the curtain from snagging on the edges.
- 3). Slide the curtain rod extender into the traditional curtain rod. You may need to stretch the cut end of the rod with pliers. This allows the other curtain rod extender to fit more easily inside the rod.
- 4). Adjust the rods until you have the desired length. If desired, and if it won't show under the curtains, duct tape the poles in place. Otherwise, add a second center support.
- 5). Center the curtain pole on the window and place the pole on the previously installed hardware brackets.
