NIOSH Grants & Scholarships
- These training grants fund the development of Education and Research Centers (ERC) that help NIOSH meet its obligations mandated by the Occupational and Safety Health Act (OSHA) to provide qualified occupational safety and health personnel. The ERCs provide graduate training and continuing education in areas like industrial hygiene and occupational health nursing. Each grant applicant may submit one proposal for a three-year project and a budget of up to $1.8 million per year. Depending on funds available, 12 to 20 awards are given. Non-award winners resubmit a proposal once and award winners can submit renewal applications to continue their projects up to five years at $1.8 million per year. One to 10 renewal awards are given out each year.
- OSHA Training Project Grants help fund training programs at colleges and universities. Undergraduate and graduate programs are eligible. New applicants can submit proposals for projects lasting up to three years and renewal applicants can submit applications for extensions up to five years. Undergraduate programs are awarded up to $50,000 per year, predoctoral programs are given up to $125,000 per year, and occupational medical residency programs are awarded up to $200,000 per year. Twenty to thirty awards are given each year.
- Some research grants may be available to graduate and doctoral students as well as academic researchers. The grants fund research focused on different aspects of prevention for workplace-related injuries. This includes identifying at-risk populations, determining incidences and how often workplace injuries occur and finding ways to eliminate or reduce worker exposure to hazards. Some of the grants are sponsored by NIOSH while others may be cosponsored with other entities like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Award amounts vary. Current grant opportunities include the Mentored Research Scientist Development Award and the NIOSH Small Research Grant Award.
- In addition to training grants, NIOSH offers cooperative agreements and conference grants. NIOSH uses cooperative agreement grants to collaborate with nonprofits, state health departments, universities and labor unions on research projects that come up with prevention solutions to occupational diseases and injuries. Current grant programs including research on mesothelioma (a cancer that affects the lining of bodily organs) and ways to have a healthier workforce and protect workers in the workplace. Cooperative agreement grant award amounts vary. The conference grants help organizations and institutions hold conferences and scientific meetings focused on occupational health. Current conference grant awards are up to $20,000.
