    • 1). Start Microsoft Word by double-clicking on the icon or choosing it from the Start Menu. If the recovery panel shows up, choose your document from the list and Word will recover the file automatically. If no recovery panel displays, go to the next step.

    • 2). Open the file in Word by clicking "File" and "Open." If the file opens, save the file as an RTF by clicking on "File" and "Save as." If you are using Word 2007 or later, "File" has been replaced with the Orb at the top left of the screen. Continue on to the next step if this does not work.

    • 3). Open and repair the file in Word by clicking on "File" and then "Open." Click on the name of the file, and then click on the arrow next to the "Open" button. Choose "Open and Repair." Continue on to the next step if this does not work.

    • 4). Open Word without add-ons by clicking on the Start Menu and choosing "Run." Type " winword /a" and pressing enter on your keyboard. Open the file using "File" and "Open." Continue on to the next step if this does not work.

    • 5). Open the file in Wordpad. Click on the Start Menu and choose "Accessories." Click on "Wordpad." Open the file by clicking on "File" and "Open." Continue onto the next step if this does not work.

    • 6). Download third-party recovery software from one of the vendors listed in resources. Open the file in the software to start the recovery process.
