- 1). Shut off the power to the switch box you are removing by turning off the main breaker at the breaker box. Remove the cover plate of the switch box by unfastening the screws with a screwdriver.
- 2). Take the cover plate off and unfasten the screws holding the light switches to the switch box with a screwdriver. Pull the light switches forward and loosen the screws that secure the electrical wires to the switches.
- 3). Remove the light switches from the electrical wires and place electrical tape around the exposed ends of the wires. Locate the nails on the sides of the switch box that secure the box to the wood studs and cut the nails on the sides of the box with a hacksaw.
- 4). Pull the switch box forward gently, feeding the electrical wires through the holes in the back of the box. Remove the switch box from the wall.
