Resume - Strengthen Your Resume by Writing it Upside Down!

103 12
You know I don't mean writing your resume while standing on your head or turning the paper upside down.
What I do mean is that the way you write your resume is the opposite of how it gets read.
It's upside down! And the bottom line is that when you write your resume so it connects with the reader, your resume will generate more interest and interviews.
Think of it this way: If your resume were a building, your reader -- your next boss -- would be looking at it from high overhead, trying to get a sense of what kind of building it is -- its use and function in the world.
If it looks like what he or she needs, they'll land the airplane or descend from the hill and come in to find out more.
Your next boss (or the HR person or recruiter) will ask the following questions as they read your resume, and simply stop reading when they get an answer that doesn't match what they need or want, or when they don't find the answer at all:
  • Will this person help me?
  • Do they know the industry and job function?
  • Do they have the skills and experience I need?
  • Will they make me look ME look good
  • Is this someone I want to work with and have on MY team?
You, on the other hand, are the builder who begins with a set of plans and then, from the ground up, constructs the structure you want to share with the world.
As you build, keep its purpose in mind, so your resume speaks to the reader.
Here's how you build:
  • Start with a strong base of your natural strengths and talents.
  • Build up by packaging your accomplishments and problem solving skills so that your next boss can see the results of your efforts.
  • Go higher by highlighting your noteworthy and relevant skills and experience.
Build a sturdy structure by choosing ONLY relevant information to connect with the reader.
  • Finally, "top out" in your summary section by making bold promises about what you and your next boss can do together.
